AMMONIA (NH3)
The proposed ammonia plant has the capacity
of 2,000 MTPD which will consume circ. 65 MMSCFD and targeted
to be in operation in 3rd quarter 2008.
Major uses of ammonia include:
- Manufacture of nitrogen based fertilizer (more than 80%
ammonia produced is for fertilizer)
- Industrial ammonia (Ammonium Nitrate, Nitric Acid, Ammonium
Sulfate, etc)
- As a reagent in metallurgical processes
- As a chemical for the manufacture of cleaning products and
refrigeration gases.
also was used to produce plastics, synthetic fibers and resins,
and numerous other chemical compounds.
THE PROCESS
Ammonia is produced by the Haber Bosch process that involves
steam reforming of natural gas to produce hydrogen, followed
by reaction with nitrogen. The technology is mature, with
the market dominated by prominent licensors:
- Haldor Topsoe
- Kellogg Brown Root (KBR)
- Casale
- Kinetics Technology
- Snamprogetti
- Krupp-Koppers
- Linde
- CdF
- Braun
- Uhde
Kellogg has developed a precious metal-based catalyst but
otherwise the technology is mature and not envisaged to change.
Haldor Topsoe and KBR combined own more than 75 percent world
market share as supplier of the technology.
PAU will choose the proven technology that is suitable for
Sulawesi tropical environment where the knowledge and experiences
of our management team will assist the process for obtaining
the most favorable.

Amonia Market
Main market for ammonia is North America,
Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Korea, India, The Philippines,
Taiwan, Brazil.
Steady increase of ammonia usage and demand are the main basis
of establishing the project. Market has shown that ammonia
price has risen from USD 140 to 280/Tonne and predicted a
steady increase of USD 170 – 220 on yr 2008 –
2025 (Source: DH Lauriente Consultants
Ltd, Jul 2003).
The current price (as at May 2005) floats at USD 250-300/ton.
